For most couples, it is the mom who initiates the search to find a doula, yet partners come to really appreciate the doula as an integral part of the birth team. Very often when birthing in the hospital couples are left alone for long periods of time with various nurses only occasionally coming in and out. There will be many unfamiliar faces and new experiences during a couples' labor and birth journey. The doula, having developed a relationship with the expecting couple, provides that familiar face and ensures that mom will never be left alone.

Doula Support for Partners

Partners will better serve mom if they have opportunities to maintain their energy level and stamina without worrying about having to leave mom alone. Partners really appreciate the guidance we offer on how to touch mom, how to help her cope and what to say. When you have the continuous support and expertise of a doula, partners can focus on emotionally and spiritually supporting and loving mom without having to worry about being an expert on birth.

Coaches vs Birth Guardians

We don't believe partners should have to be "birth coaches" but rather, true to Birthing From Within philosophy, we like to think of them as "birth guardians." When a laboring woman feels safe and supported to follow her instincts as she births, she will trust herself and the process of birth as it unfolds. Doulas can help facilitate this process by being a resource and guide for the partners. Partners are having their own experience of the labor and birth. Having a doula will allow them to be present for their journey as well.
